The middle-aged man at her front door looked to be dressed too casually for a first time meeting with a new client, but Helen Ewing decided to give Eric Cubitt with his combat shorts and tee-shirt the benefit of the doubt.

“Mr Cubitt! Come in.” Helen waved an arm in the direction of the hallway.

“Afternoon Ma’am.” Eric Cubitt placed one designer trainer over the threshold. “Pleased to meet you.”

“Don’t call me Ma’am, please.” Helen giggled whilst shaking her head. “You make me feel like the Queen.”

Eric grinned and followed Helen into the house.

“All ladies are queens to me.”

“I think we’re going to get along splendidly.” Helen entered the front room. “Do take a seat. We’ve got about an hour. My husband has taken the three younger children to their music lessons.”

She watched Eric sitting down on the edge of the leather Chesterfield and taking a quick glance around the room before speaking.

“So… what can I do for you Mrs Ewing?”

Helen took a deep breath.

“The usual. I’d like to find out if my husband is having an affair.”

“Ah…I see.” Eric nodded. “Yes, I get a lot of those.”

“I thought you might.” Helen sighed. “I can give you a photo and a list of his usual haunts. You’ll need to phone me on the number I called you on before.”

“Sure. Here’s my rates and terms and conditions.” Eric peeled off a piece of paper from a booklet. “Have a read through and then if you’re in agreement we can get to work.”
